This is a brief survey of objects Chaussette has created in ceramic clay.
Like all of her work, “Farida or The Dance,” has an interesting back story. The work was inspired by observing her friend, the French artist Farida Le Suave, working beside Chaussette on another of her series of enormous clay sculptures. Weeks’ before, Chaussette saw a performance of Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf.” As she watched her friend at work, Chaussette remembered how she imagined the musicians playing invisible instruments so she could focus on the joy and lyricism of their movements. In the same way she emphasized the beauty of Farida’s arms as her friend sculpted the piece, as well as the beatific, trance-like expression on her face.
“Kate’s Box” plays on the idea of a functional piece of art while “Maman” is a quick study of a friend’s mother visiting from France. When she popped into our studio for a brief visit, We did not communicate in words but she agreed to be “model” when the normal model did not appear that fateful morning. We were both pleased with the result.
